SOM GALLERY

SOM GALLERY is delighted to announce "Stroke," a solo exhibition by Asami Shiode on view from September 6 to 22. This exhibition is her first solo exhibition at SOM GALLERY.
In this exhibition, Shiode will present a series of works based on Paul Cézanne's “Apples” motif, which is a representative group of Shiode's works, as well as a large work.

Asami Shioide presses a wire mesh or coarse linen cloth onto a still-life painting, which she paints thickly with oil and acrylic paints, and the resulting paint rises to the surface, creating a work of art. Shioide's works, which are composed by the unevenness of the paint, challenge the notion that painting is flat and two-dimensional, and challenge a new 2.5-dimensional pictorial expression and the expansion of the field.

“What does it mean to say that an apple “exists”?

Is the apple depicted in the painting really there?

In “A Study of Apples,” Kiyoteru Hanada once posed the question to artists, “Is there a seed in the apple?”

It's been a long time since having such a classic subject matter has become unrefined, but I would like to crawl on the ground, check each one with my fingertips, and see the apples that are not “again”.

The expression guided by this desire is accompanied by despair and reflection, and the various situations in which a person is placed naturally emerge.

It is compelled to extend the defined territory with regard to painting.

And is there such a thing as a non-copy?

But isn't it possible?

And even if there is, it's okay to be.

How does it become an apple?”
