SOM GALLERY is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by Nao Tatsumi "Traces of shifting dust", from 17th February to 10th March at Bakuroyokoyama.
This exhibition is her first solo show at SOM GALLERY, and she presents her unique landscape paintings in the post-Internet era.
She uses Google Street View to draw the motif of the actual street where the photo was taken, and paints her own unique landscapes by overlapping and arranging the discrepancies created by the digitalization of the actual landscape and the gaps created in her own painting.
In these new works, she selects a motif location in Google Street View and reconstructs a street scene from multiple images, including images of different angles and past images of the location.By reconstructing them, she amplifies the digital "bugs" and creates new street motifs. She paints based on these motifs, superimposing the bugs generated in digital space and the gaps created by her own painting.
Therefore, the landscape she depicts is extended into the real world and appears as the surface of the painting.
In the act of painting landscapes, Tatsumi focuses on the temporality and coincidence that landscapes contain.
The view that one sees is not exactly the same there, even if it is from the same angle in the same place. The landscape is in a state of flux, changing with time, weather, seasons, and many other conditions. In other words, the approximate view one sees is the result of the accumulation of all past coincidences.
The errors in the composition of the surface, which are created by the layering of her painting, can be said to follow a formation process similar to the landscapes in real life.
The exhibition features about fifteen new paintings.
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, 17 February at 19:00-21:00 at SOM GALLERY.
We look forward to seeing you at the exhibition.
