SOM GALLERY is thrilled to announce “Yukue” a duo show by Yoshiro Kawakami and Shun Komiyama on view from October 4 to 27. This exhibition will be Kawakami's first exhibition in Japan in two and a half years, and Komiyama's second exhibition at SOM GALLERY.

Yoshiro Kawakami graduated from Painting, Department of Fine Arts, Tokyo Zokei University in 2018, and completed Department of Animation, Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2020. In his works, He continuously depict young people who live in adolescence without a place to belong and not knowing whether they are males or females, whether they are adults or children, whether they are in this world or another. Currently based in Tokyo, he makes paintings and animations, which are mainly exhibited in Japan and other Asian countries.
Shun Komiyama is a photographer and artist from Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. He has been focusing on the beauty of photography, which to him is, "to capture one's point of view on actual events," and expresses and builds a graphical world without relying on computer editing. Currently, he is based in Kanagawa and exhibits mainly in Tokyo.

The title, “Yukue” derives from human emotions on the “one’s way home” that they focus on each other in their daily lives. When we go out somewhere, we go home in the end. Sometimes we will go straight home, sometimes we will take a little detour aimlessly.
Whether they are heading back home or simply wandering aimlessly, even they may not know where they are going. The emotions and landscapes that wash over us are fleeting and beautiful, sometimes warm, sometimes cold. Kawakami brings such elusive human emotions to life by depicting young people and landscapes, while Komiyama evokes them by cutting out parts of the city that remind us of the accumulation and passage of time.

Yoshiro Kawakami was born in 1993 in Tokyo. Major solo exhibitions include “Crying in the Nothingness” at AUGHT NEW YORK (New York, 2023) and “Unknown Silence” at Contemporary Tokyo (Beijing, 2023).
